Book design based on childhood memories
This research-based project explores the act of recalling, collecting, and visualizing childhood memories - some of our earliest and most formative experiences. These memories often shape who we become, influencing our emotions, creativity, and relationships.
Through primary and secondary research, I began this journey by revisiting my own childhood through drawing, using illustration as a tool to reconnect with those early experiences.
Building on this exploration, I designed an interactive book for children and parents to use together. The layout of the book focuses on fostering intimacy and meaningful connection between parent and child. Sitting face-to-face, they can draw, color, and share stories - creating a space for conversation, reflection, and quality time.
The book features a series of fun, guided exercises designed to encourage creative collaboration and open communication. While children enjoy expressing themselves through drawing, parents are invited to revisit their own childhood memories, allowing both to form new ones in the process.
To share and evaluate the project, I conducted a workshop at Weston Park Museum, Sheffield, on 29th April 2017, involving children aged 5 to 9 years and their parents. The workshop aimed to bring families together through drawing, for parents, it was a nostalgic journey down memory lane; for children, a playful way to express themselves through art. All participating parents signed consent forms granting me permission to use and display their children’s photographs and drawings.
